New coach Alistair Edwards names first Joeys squad for Canberra training camp

The former Socceroos striker has one eye on the AFC Under-16 Championships later this year, and will run his eye over 26 players in Canberra

New Australian under-17 coach Alistair Edwards has named 26-player squad to take part in a training camp at the Australian Institute of Sport, beginning Friday and concluding on Sunday in Canberra.

Former Australia international Edwards will take control of his first training session with the help of assistant coach Tony Vidmar, and the pair intend to use their first camp together as preparation for the AFC Under-16 Championship in Iran from September 21 to October 6.

Edwards said in a statement he had been impressed with the quality on show and is very excited about working with the group of players.

"Over the past weeks I have been visiting National Training Centres around the country and have been very impressed by the quality of players within this age group," he said.

"This camp will be the first opportunity for us to work together and to start bonding as a playing group.

"With the support of the AIS, this will be the first of regular training camps, which are paramount for us to be fully prepared by the time we get to the AFC U-16 Championship.

"The door is definitely still open for other players to be added to the squad, but it is now up to this group of players to take their opportunity and make a good impression."
