Philadelphia Union 2-1 Montreal Impact: Flurry of late goals livens up insipid game

For 80 minutes, Montreal did enough to leave Philly with a point, but a late flurry of goals granted the Union all three points.

All three goals came in the final 10 minutes as the Philadelphia Union beat the Montreal Impact 2-1.

The visiting Impact were cagey and looked to release Marco Di Vaio on swift counters in PPL Park. It nearly panned out midway through the second half when the Italian Designated Player used a deft trap to slip in on goal, but Zac MacMath tipped the poked shot just wide.

Lionard Pajoy had a similarly good chance when he spun in the box to turn a rebound back on frame. Donovan Ricketts hurled his lanky frame at the ball to save the attempt. But Pajoy wasn't done. A few minutes later he scored, with help from another fellow substitute. Antoine Hoppenot wriggled down the left flank and crossed from the end line. Pajoy won the scramble on the line, toeing the ball into the roof of the net from half a yard out.

That goal sparked what had been a slumbering stalemate. Almost immediately, a combination of Keon Daniels and MacMath managed to turn a Patrice Bernier corner into their own net. If Bernier is credited with the assist, he has scored or assisted nine times in the last nine games.

But the late drama didn't stop there. Another set piece breakdown, this one favoring Philly, allowed Carlos Valdes to score from a long throw.
