New England Revolution 0-1 Toronto FC: Early goal leads TFC to road win
A goal inside the first 10 minutes ended up deciding the day as Paul Mariner earned a win over his former club.
Winslow Townson
Toronto FC got a satisfying win over coach Paul Mariner's former club on Saturday, as TFC topped the New England Revolution 1-0.
A very professional showing from the Canadian outfit got off to a good start in the eighth minute when Danny Koevermans set Luis Silva up for the game's only goal.
After taking the early lead, Toronto adapted the mentality of a road team with a lead, packing it in an forcing New England to break down a defense that was loaded with numbers. The strategy worked well, as the Revs were frustrated time and again when they tried to force their way through.
The home side did put the ball into the net late in the second half, but did so illegally. After a clever back flick from Benny Feilhaber, Shalrie Joseph gave up on the idea of trying to head the ball home and slapped it in with his hand. Joseph earned only a caution, not a goal, on the play.
TFC would see out seven minutes of stoppage time in the second half to salt away the victory.
