Wigan boss Roberto Martinez is unlikely to make too many changes from the team that narrowly lost 2-1 away to Fulham and could stick with the same defensive players but could make a change further forward.

Former Aston Villa man Shaun Maloney could be pushing for a recall and may take the place of Jordi Gomez. Up front, Franco Di Santo is looking to shake off a calf injury while Hugo Rodallega (knee) has been out for over a month. Former Almeria winger Albert Crusat remains on the sidelines with a calf problem.

Alan Pardew is likely to name the same side that beat Stoke City 3-0 last time out. This will mean Hatem Ben Arfa and Demba Ba will again play either side of the in-form Papiss Cisse. Yohan Cabaye limped off against the Potters with an ankle knock but is expected to feature.

Former Manchester United winger Gabriel Obertan could come back into the squad. Long-term injury absentees Sylvain Marveaux (groin), Steven Taylor (achilles) and Peter Lovenkrands (knee) remain sidelined.

The former Crystal Palace man is showing signs of developing into an impressive player. His blistering pace has now been complemented by a more consistent end product.

With five league goals so far he could probably do with hitting the back of the net more to take his game onto the next level. The home side will be hoping he can perform once again to help them get a vital win as they battle against the drop.

The 26-year-old put in arguably one of the best displays by a midfielder in the Premier League so far this season in Newcastle’s game against Stoke last weekend.

The former Lille man bagged two goals and got a stunning assist to help his side to another win. His midfield partnership alongside Cheikh Tiote is looking like one of the best in the division, and Wigan will have to stop the Frenchman if they are to get a result.

Prediction
This match is crucial to both sides for different reasons - Wigan sit just outside of the relegation positions and are desperate for three points to remain so.

Newcastle, however, are chasing victory as they look to stay in the Champions League spots with just a few games to go. The game could go either way with both teams in good form, but the Magpies’ extra attacking potency could see them run out winners.
