Rio Ferdinand - England (PA)
England midfielder Michael Carrick believes that Rio Ferdinand's ascent to becoming the captain of the national team will not affect the Three Lions' plans for the 2010 World Cup.

Ferdinand will fill the void left by John Terry's demotion, and Carrick believes that his Manchester United team-mate checks all the boxes when it comes to being a worthy skipper.

"Rio's a terrific leader and a terrific captain," Carrick is quoted by The Sun as saying. "He's a world-class player.

"He's done it in the Champions League final and won it, so it won't faze him in that respect.

"Rio has the respect of the players and that's an important thing so I'm sure he'll be successful.

"Once you're on the pitch you've all got to lead in some way so I don't think it will affect things too much."
