The appointment of Rio Ferdinand as England's new captain has pleased Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who is proud that another Red Devil will be leading the Three Lions.

Ferdinand succeeds John Terry, who was stripped of his duties as skipper due to the publicised revelations of his alleged extra-marital affair with former team-mate Wayne Bridge's ex-partner Vanessa Perroncel.

Ferguson takes delight that Ferdinand will now follow in the footsteps of veteran right-back Gary Neville, iconic midfielder David Beckham, 'Captain Marvel' Bryan Robson, and World Cup winner Sir Bobby Charlton.

"We are pleased for him and it's great for Manchester United to have one of our players captaining our country," Ferguson beamed to The Manchester Evening News.

"Over the years we've had Gary, Bobby Charlton and Bryan Robson for 60-odd games or something so we're very proud of that."

Terry's fate was sealed after a 12-minute meeting with England manager Fabio Capello and Capello's assistant Franco Baldini at Wembley on Friday.

The Italian tactician recently said: "When I chose John Terry as captain, I also selected a vice-captain [Ferdinand] and also named a third choice [Steven Gerrard]."

"There is no reason to change this decision."
