Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has today handed supporters some better news on the injury front by confirming that Owen Hargreaves is gradually edging closer to a first-team return.

The Canadian-born England international has been out of action with severe knee problems since September 2008.

However, it looks now as though he will make a return to serious football next Thursday for United's reserve side.

"Owen Hargreaves has shown for the first time that he's almost ready to play, Ferguson confirmed at a press conference on Friday morning.

"He's been training with the first-team, which has been good to see, and is pencilled in for a game with the reserves on Thursday."

United's reserve side face their Manchester City equivalents next Thursday, March 11, at Moss Lane in Altrincham.
