Manchester United have already beaten Arsenal to the signature of Fulham's highly rated 20-year-old centre back Smalling, and now Ferguson wants to put a long term partnership in place by securing another Arsene Wenger target, the 19-year-old Rodwell.
The Everton midfielder and defender has impressed this season for an injury-ravaged side and seems certain to make a big money move in the near future, following the trend for the richest clubs to snap up young talent before prices rise or rivals pounce.
The Merseysiders are still hostile towards United over the acrimonious signing of Wayne Rooney a few years ago, and Ferguson is keen to begin negotiations in timely and amicable fashion this time around in order to get his man.
The Red Devils reportedly value Rodwell at £12 million, but David Moyes is likely to demand up to double that figure for his most promising academy graduate since the England striker.
In the summer he squeezed £24 million from Manchester City for defender Jolean Lescott, but is likely to settle for less if and when Rodwell departs.
Ferguson sees Rodwell and Smalling as potential centre back partners for Manchester United and even England for a decade, should their development continue apace, and expects to play enough domestic Cup ties for the duo to learn their trade.
However, missing out on Smalling could make Wenger more determined than ever to sign Rodwell ahead of his Premier League rivals.
