Manchester United's injury-wracked centre back pairing Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic have been undergoing secret sessions at a clinic that describes itself as "the last resort" as they struggle to overcome long-lasting injuries.

United's record-breaking defence of last season has been a shadow of its former self this time around, with both England captain Ferdinand and the inspirational Vidic sidelined for long periods and unresponsive to treatment.

The News of the World reports that The Blackberry Clinic in Milton Keynes is attempting to find a solution to the mystery back and calf problems that had kept Ferdinand out for three months until his return two weeks ago.

Vidic has not played this year as he struggles with a calf injury.

Set up over 20 years ago, the Blackberry Clinic specializes in treating back, neck and joint pains.

The Premier League stars' treatment has been overseen by clinic director Simon Petrides, a muscoskeletal physician whose methods include manipulations and injections.

Rehabilitation programmes feature pilates and other exercises to aid recovery and prevent any recurrence.

The treatment may just be working: Ferdinand made his comeback during United's 4-0 thrashing of Hull on 23rd January, although Vidic remains on the sidelines.

The Serb pulled out during the warm-up before the FA Cup defeat by Leeds United in January and has still not recovered, perhaps not helped by speculation over his future at the club after he reportedly argued with manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Ferguson appears to be making plans for the next generation of defenders, having signed Fulham's Chris Smalling, 20, and been heavily linked with Everton's teenage star, Jack Rodwell.

However, he, Manchester United and England will be hoping the Blackberry Club can extend Ferdinand's playing career for a few years yet.
