Dempo SC had already landed their fifth I-League title after their last encounter when they played a goalless draw against Kingfisher East Bengal. So for all intents and purposes the match against Prayag United at the Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata was a dry rubber. However the I-League winners would have obviously wanted to end their campaign on a strong note, and boy did they do it well beating Prayag United 3-0 with goals from Ranti Martins ( 18' ), Climax Lawrence ( 31' ) and Koko Sakibo (87' ) to add icing on the cake.
For the record, Prayag United had been the unlikely winners in their last encounter at Goa, in a surprise upset of the league champions. Interestingly the Prayag team, in an unique gesture not seen before in I-League history, gave Dempo a guard of honour as they had already clinched the I-League crown last week.
In the 31st minute, Climax Lawrence capitalised on a defensive lapse to double the lead for the away side. Against a hapless Prayag side whose season ended in mid-table mediocrity, Koko Sakibo did the final rites as he scored his first and the team's third late on in the 87th minute.
Dempo SC finished their campaign with 57 points from 26 matches while Prayag United finished on 42 points from 26 matches.
Minister for Sports, West Bengal, Mr. Madan Mitra and Mr. Kushal Das, General Secretary, All India Football Federation handed the Champions Trophy to Dempo SC.
