Stekelenburg denies Roma exit rumours

The former Ajax custodian has denied talk that he is looking to leave the Serie A side in the summer and has also spoken of his injury woes which may leave him out of the Euros

Roma goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg has refuted rumours he is keen to leave the Stadio Olimpico at the end of the current campaign.

The Netherlands international only joined the Serie A side last summer from Ajax and has been a regular until recently where he has struggled with a shoulder injury.

Despite the club having an inconsistent campaign, Stekelenburg has spoken out to reassure the Giallorossi faithful.

“I can’t understand where there rumours have come from, I’ve not even been here a year and already they are saying I want to go,” the 29-year-old told Roma Channel. “Whoever says this is stupid.”

The keeper also spoke about his current injury woes and admitted he is unsure whether he will be fit in time for this summer's European Championship.

“It’s hard, I’m doing the therapy, we’ll see what happens in the coming days. Things are better, it’s a problem I’ve carried since around December, I kept playing hoping that it might heal itself but now the pain is too strong to allow me to play.

“Whoever says I’m leaving is a fool, I would like to play all the games here, I love playing, it’s my life. However, the doctors are not sure yet if I can play at the European Championship.”

Stekelenburg has made 33 appearances for Roma this term in all competitions.
