Chelsea to pocket a record €55 million TV money from Champions League

The Blues will make more than ever from the competition thanks to the unmatched size of the English broadcasting deals and could double that figure with sales in other areas

Chelsea will pocket a record figure of €55 million in TV money from this season's Champions League.

The Blues will enjoy the windfall thanks to the unmatched size of the broadcasting deals agreed by Uefa with English corporations.

They could yet double their total earnings from the competition depending on the amount of money generated from sources such as ticket and merchandise sales and sponsorship.

The winners of the trophy will also receive €3.4m, with Chelsea taking on Bayern Munich in the final at the Allianz Arena on May 19.

The previous record belonged to Manchester United, whose top figure of €54m fell to €34m this season as a result of their failure to qualify for the knockout stages of the competition.

Arsenal earned €2.4m less than last season, taking home €27.8m, while Manchester City earned €26m.

In contrast, City were handed just €5.5m of TV money for their participation in the Europa League last season.

Chelsea's earnings are up from €44m last season as a result of their progression to the final. Last season, they were knocked out at the quarter-final stage,

The Blues, owned by Roman Abramovich, could also deal a blow to the side finishing fourth in the Premier League if they beat Bayern in Munich.

If Chelsea win the Champions League but finish outside of the top four, they will take the place of the top flight's fourth-placed team in the competition next season. That would mean a loss of at least €24m in TV money for Newcastle United or Tottenham, who are competing with the Blues for the final spot.
