Home United were dealt a massive blow to their AFC Cup chances when they lost 2-1 to Chonburi FC in a lively Group G encounter at the Bishan Stadium. Former SAFFC star, Therdsak Chaiman starred for Chonburi in his return to Singapore and was instrumental in attack for the visitors.
Both teams came into this clash having secured their places in the last 16, but the stakes were still high for top spot, which would mean a home tie in the next round. Victory for Chonburi means that they secure top spot and ensure home advantage while Home United now face a long journey to the Middle East to face the winners of Group E – either Al Shorta of Syria, Al Zawra’a of Iraq or Safa of Lebanon – in a one-off knockout match.
Chonburi started the brighter of the two sides and took an early lead on 4 minutes. Therdsak's cross after neat play down the right flank was headed home by Pipob On-Mo past the diving Lionel Lewis.
Three minutes later, defender Fode Bangaly Diakite powered his header against the crossbar from a Therdsak corner. That effort sparked live into the Protectors, who missed the presence of Frederic Mendy who was left on the bench due to a niggling ankle injury, and they began to find their feet.
On 9 minutes, Firdaus Idros had a great chance to bring parity to the score when he was put through by Johnny Wilkinson but save his effort saved. Chonburi continued to be a threat with Therdsak linking up with Pipob and Kengne Ludovick to keep the Protectors on the back foot.
Therdsak then had a glorious chance to extend the lead for the visitors after a cross field pass by Kazuto Kushida but saw his effort cleared off the line by Jeremy Chiang.
Home United coach Lee Lim Saeng sent on Mendy to boost his team's attack on the half-hour mark and it almost proved decisive. Mendy was at the end of a Shi Jiayi cross but fluffed his volley and saw his second attempt cleared.
The Protectors were brighter with Mendy on the pitch and began to make incisive runs and test the Chonburi defence from set pieces. The half drew to a close with Shi Jiayi's effort sailing over the crossbar.
Coach Lim attempted a tactical change at half-time pushing Anzite upfield to partner forward Shotaro Ihata with Masrewan Masturi dropping into defence. Anzite's physique enabled him to hold up play and bring his teammates into the game.
Anzite almost equalized with a brilliant overhead kick attempt from a cross by Qiu Li but saw his attempt parried by the Chonburi keeper.
With the Protectors surging forward in numbers, Chonburi continued to find space and remained a threat. On 57 minutes, substitute Kotchaplayuk Noppanon got to the end of a long pass and lobbed the diving Lionel Lewis only to see the effort cleared by Rosman Sulaiman.
Six minutes later, Therdsak who was a constant thorn for visitors tested Lionel Lewis with a low drive from the edge of the box.
Coach Lim then sent on Hafiz Nor and Indra Shahdan Daud to freshen his team and add firepower, but the Protectors continued to be poor in the final third - bereft of ideas.
The visitors kept possession well, frustrating the Protectors and went forward with intricate passing movements that brought cheers from the vocal visiting fans, who did not fail to make their presence felt.
Chonburi then killed the game as a contest when substitute Noppanon bundled the ball home after a through ball from Therdsak after 77 minutes.
Noppanon, who was lively after coming on, almost extended the lead on 81 minutes for the hosts after racing through but saw his effort flash across the goal and run wide.
The Protectors finally reduced the deficit after 87 minutes, a goal their efforts deserved. Anzite raced on to a through ball from Mendy and cut the ball back for substitute Indra to side foot home and make it 2-1.
Home United continued to huff and puff but failed to find the net again and now face a tough away tie in the Middle East in the round of 16.
