It is do-or-die for S.League champions Tampines Rovers when they take on Hong Kong champions Kitchee FC in an AFC Group F clash, tomorrow at the Jalan Besar stadium.
The Stags who currently have four points and are tied with Vietnam champions Song Lam Nghe An in the bottom half of the group, face possible elimination should they fail to secure maximum points in this tantalising clash.
On the other hand, Kitchee who lead the group with nine points after three consecutive wins, were stunned 1-0 by Song Lam when they visited Vietnam last week and will be wary of the threat from the Stags.
When the two sides met on match day one, the "Hong Kong Barca" drew first blood with a 3-1 win at home, thanks to a brace from striker Liang Zicheng.
This time round, a win for the Hong Kong champions will put them into the next stage of the Cup and coach Josep Gombau will definitely want his boys to get the three points and not slip up again.
He will be banking on the foreign attacking trio of captain Roberto Losada, Jorge Tarres and Yago Lopez, who have scored a total of nearly thirty goals this season, to find a way pass the Tampines’s defence.
But it will not be easy for the visitors as most visiting teams struggle with the artificial pitch at the Jalan Besar stadium. Tampines will therefore, have an advantage and will be making full use of that to get the all important three points which will move them closer to the next stage.
While the visitors have their attacking trio, Tampines have their own version too, which consists of veteran winger Ahmad Latiff, captain marvel Aleksandar Duric and lastly, silent assassin Jamil Ali.
Latiff, who has been a menace down the flanks for the Stags in the previous AFC matches, will be the most dangerous as he is currently high on morale after finally clearing the beep test after countless attempt this season.
Together with age-less wonder Duric and Jamil, they will not be easy to handle and Kitchee’s defenders have to pay extra attention to the latter who has developed a knack of scoring late goals.
Although Tampines fell to a 1-0 defeat to Albirex Niigata last Thursday in the league and will be missing midfield general Mustafic Fahrudin due to suspension, the Stags will be giving it their best shot in order to advance.
