Wigan defender Stam eyes PSV loan move

The Dutchman is keen to move from the Premier League club back to his homeland after recently failing to secure regular first-team football with the Latics

Wigan Athletic defender Ronnie Stam has expressed his desire to join PSV on loan in a quest to find regular first-team football.

The 27-year-old was an ever-present for Roberto Martinez before February, but has made only one appearance in the past three months.

And the defender confirmed that the Eredivisie club had approached him with a loan offer last summer, but said that the request was turned down.

Stam told Voetval International: "Last summer PSV tried to sign me on loan. They don't do that if I don't want to go.

"At that time Wigan didn't cooperate, [which is] too bad. But I still think the same about it.

"PSV is a beautiful club, but there are more great clubs. But it would be a great solution for my situation at Wigan."

The Dutchman, who signed for the Latics in 2010, also revealed his belief that a contract extension clause is the reason for his sudden struggle for appearances.

"I played almost every match until February," he continued.

"I'm two matches away from a contracted salary increase. I think they regret that over here [Wigan], because I'm not playing anymore."
