Player Ratings: Bolton 1-4 Tottenham

Spurs back in the driving seat for the final Champions League place as they see off a resurgent but sloppy Trotters side.

The Hungarian must be excellent in training because he always seems to look nervous in matches. Almost gifted Spurs the lead inside the first ten minutes when he palmed Gareth Bale’s shot right to Rafael van der Vaart, but couldn’t really have done anything about any of the Spurs goals.

  • Sam Ricketts

    Sam Ricketts

Tortured by both Aaron Lennon and Bale as the two switched a few times. Luckily for him Lennon’s deliveries were fairly poor, but he still had no answer for the England winger.

    D. Boyata

Considerably better than Ricketts on the other side of the back four. Put in a number of challenges on Bale and Van der Vaart and tried to push forward when he could, although that wasn’t as often as he would have liked given his defensive duties.

  • David Wheater

    David Wheater

The former Middlesbrough man generally did well in the first-half, putting in good last-ditch tackles and blocks, but after the break he couldn’t deal with the movement of Spurs in attack. His lack of mobility definitely worked against him as Bolton was sliced open.

  • Tim Ream

    Tim Ream

Caught out for Adebayor’s second as the striker slipped past him to retrieve Bales’ pass and was out of position all too often.

    Chris Eagles

The only Bolton midfielder who looked capable of creating anything in the first half, but faded in the second. Always looked positive, getting the ball on the ground and running and defenders, but most of the time he was forced to try things all by himself.

  • Martin Petrov

    Martin Petrov

Was going to have a tough night up against Kyle Walker, but he did manage to get in a few really good crosses. One delivery almost ended with a David Ngog goal, but his teammates generally weren’t quick enough to get to his crosses.

  • Mark Davies

Mark Davies Flop of the Match

Earlier in the season Owen Coyle was raving about the midfielder, tipping him for an England call up, but on the basis of this performance, he was being a bit too loyal. He always tried to drive forward, but his passing was awful at times, and he was even targeted by some parts of the crowd.

  • Nigel Reo-Coker

    Nigel Reo-Coker

Got Bolton back into the match with a well-taken finish in the penalty area, but don’t let that fool you because the former West Ham man was anonymous for all but 10 of the 65 minutes he was on the field. His passing wasn’t good and he failed to impose himself on Modric.

  • Kevin Davies

    Kevin Davies

Typically aggressive, assertive and determined, but the supply to him wasn’t great and both Gallas and Kaboul dealt with him well enough.

  • David Ngog

    David Ngog

Had one good opportunity in the first-half when Eagles was able to cut Petrov’s cross back to the Frenchman, but he shot straight at Brad Friedel. Made sure the Spurs defense had a presence to contend with, but that was pretty much all he offered.

Substitutions

    Joshua Vela

Played the final 25 minutes, but his only contribution was a bad tackle on Kyle Walker which earned him a yellow card.

    Ivan Klasnic

Replaced Ngog with just under half an hour to go, but Spurs were well and truly in control by then and Bolton looked to have lost all belief.

On for the final five minutes, but didn't do anything.

  • Brad Friedel

    Brad Friedel

Forced into a few routine saves and one good stop from N’Gog, but could do little about Reo-Coker’s goal. His evening was pretty comfortable for the most part.

  • Younes Kaboul

    3.00

    Younes Kaboul

A little shaky at times, failing to clear when perhaps he should have, but he did what he had to, controlling N’Gog and making sure Kevin Davies didn’t impose himself.

  • William Gallas

    William Gallas

Similarly to Kaboul, his night was a fairly comfortable one. He had one scare when it looked as though Kevin Davies was going to reach a Petrov cross, but thankfully for the Frenchman the ball was just slightly too far in front of the striker.

  • Kyle Walker

    Kyle Walker

Had his hands full with Petrov often so wasn’t given as much chance to get forward, but when he did he looked dangerous, almost getting a goal in the first half. Should have got closer to Petrov for a few of the wingers’ crosses, but wasn’t too bad.

  • Gareth Bale

    Gareth Bale

Unusual night for the Welshman. Nearly opened the scoring with a long-range effort then almost supplied Lennon with a goal, but ended with two assists, first setting up Van der Vaart, then Adebayor’s second, but overall he wasn’t at his best. His touch seemed off at times and he didn’t look that effective when running at players in the first half. Improved after the break, however.

  • Aaron Lennon

    Aaron Lennon

Fairly stereotypical Aaron Lennon performance tonight. The winger had the beating of Ricketts all night, but his final ball was pretty poor, until he finally got one right, squaring across the goal for Adebayor in the second half.

  • Rafael van der Vaart

    Rafael van der Vaart

For the most part the Dutchman had a wasteful evening as his passing to Adebayor was poor and not much was going his way, but he restored Spurs’ lead when they were under severe pressure, calmly slotting home after good work from Bale.

  • Luka Modric

    Luka Modric

In the first half the Croatian controlled everything and scored an outrageous half-volley, but in the first 10 minutes of the second period the Bolton midfield got considerably tighter to him, and although he was quieter, he still picked out an excellent forward pass to Lennon for Adebayor’s first goal.

  • Danny Rose

    Danny Rose

Struggled in the first half as Chris Eagles looked in the mood, but grew into the match, eventually getting the better of his battle with the former Manchester United man.

  • Sandro

    Sandro

Decent performance from the Brazil international. At times he almost acted like a sweeper, bailing the defense out at the last moment while he also marched forward with great confidence.

  • Emmanuel Adebayor

Emmanuel Adebayor Top of the Match

Clinical night for the striker on-loan from Manchester City. Didn’t look as though he was enjoying the physical battle with David Wheater at times, but when given the chance he found the net with two fairly easy goals, tapping in the first, and rounding Bogdan for the second.

Substitutions

  • Ryan Nelsen

Took to the field for Gallas late on with the Spurs captain taking a knock.

  • Jake Livermore

On for the final exchanges, but had little impact.

  • Louis Saha

Similarly to Livermore, came on fairly late so didn't have enough time to do a great deal.
