  The Brazilian was handed a starting berth, and looked refreshed in his forays forward down the right in the opening half. Provided some energy on the overlap, and supported the attack well.

  Appeared a little passive at times with his defending, when a more confrontational approach might have served him better. Was often the last man back as he tidied up many loose balls that made their way past the rest of the defence.

  With many of the Bayern big guns rested in anticipation of the visit of Real Madrid midweek, Contento had an opportunity to impress with a start at left-back. Was enthusiastic in charging forward, but he looked a tad rusty as his control and decision making let him down in more than one instance.

  Committed one or two clumsy fouls in his attempts to defend against long balls, but otherwise he generally held his own at the back. Never put under significant danger by Szalai, though there were one or two jittery moments.

  Arjen Robben

  Did not fare as badly as in his horror show against Borussia Dortmund midweek, but wasn't at his devastating best either. Still appeared tentative, despite showing off his dribbling skills a few times to cause Mainz problems. Had a half-volley late on that flashed just wide. Needs to step his game back up to world-class level if Bayern are to best Madrid in the Champions League.

  D. Alaba

  Had his opportunities to sprint forward on the counter, as there was space for him to exploit out wide. For whatever reason though, he did not always appear confident in doing so, as his understanding with Contento on the left was unsurprisingly fractured. Taken off at half-time.

  Bastian Schweinsteiger

  Captained the side in the absence of Lahm, and gave a disciplined, if not dynamic showing. His radar appeared to be ever so slightly off with his passing on one or two occasions, though he did set his fair share of attacks in motion with his distribution. Solid overall but nothing spectacular.

  Anatoliy Tymoshchuk

  His tenacity was not diminished by an extended spell warming the bench in the past few months, as he charged about the midfield to disrupt Mainz with his typical aggressive style. Almost gave Bayern the lead with a few crashing drives coming in from deep, one of which hit the post. His passing did not always have the desired accuracy though.

  Ivica Olic

  His movement seemed to momentarily expose holes in the Mainz defence, and he was relentless in chasing down lost causes. Was put through on goal once by Muller at the end of the first half, but could not get enough on the ball to poke it past Heinz Muller in the Mainz goal. Subbed off on the hour mark for Gomez.

  Though still not at his best, the German international had his moments in an intelligent display in the attacking third. Some great passing and one-touch play set a few chances in motion for his team-mates, and though there was still the rare miscommunication, the positives outweighed the negatives.

  Franck Ribéry

  Came on for the second half and instantly added a sense of dynamism to the Bayern ranks. Spaces began to appear out on the flanks as his silky skills with the ball helped to keep Mainz on the back foot. He did try to do too much at times, and despite his quality, chances remained at a premium after his introduction.

  Came on for the remaining 10 minutes and almost snatched victory with a fierce drive that was parried by Heinz Muller.

  Handed the unfamiliar role of super-sub, as he was summoned from the bench to complete the last half-hour of the match. He did provide a more menacing presence up front than the man he replaced Olic, and came mightily close to getting on the end of a few chances.

  Despite Bayern’s dominance, he was not tested as much as he should have. Generally looked assured, and made one smart charge off his line to block an attempt by Olic, before beating away a late piledriver from Kroos.

  Had a good game defending agianst Robben out wide, but was caught out of position a bit too often in the early stages of the second half. Buckled down to finish the game well though.

  Kept Olic quiet in the first half, and showed impressive reading of the game to sneak between the lines and make a few timely interceptions. Was beaten in the air by Gomez a few times after the German international’s introduction, but was always able to recover.

  Radoslav Zabavnik

  Held down the fort in the first half as Bayern were not able to easily make it past him, but briefly appeared to fall apart after half-time as the hosts found space out on his flank. He survived that scare, and regained the consistency to shut Bayern out.

  Performed admirably in the heart of defence, and was always on hand to make a clearance or tackle when needed. Seemed more assured as the game progressed, and played his part in the result for Mainz.

  Rarely had any time on the ball, but nevertheless managed to make an impact with a few quick moves that caused Bayern hearts to flutter briefly. However, the lack of support from his team-mates meant that his efforts were usually in vain.

  Worked hard to close down the space in midfield, and did his part in hassling the Bayern players into a few mistakes. However, his efforts did take a toll on him as fatigue set in, and after being outsprinted on a few Bayern counterattacks, he was withdrawn on the hour mark.

  Sent a great shot wide early on that swerved just off target, but otherwise, like the rest of his attacking colleagues, struggled to make a telling impact on the game. His set-piece deliveries were hit-or-miss as well.

  Did manage to stretch the Bayern defence a few times as his pace allowed him to exploit the spaces left by the marauding play of Contento. Nothing at all came of his enterprise though, and he was forced to track back more and more as the game progressed.
