Utrecht have recorded a 2-0 win over Ajax at the Amsterdam ArenA in Sunday afternoon's Eredivisie encounter.
Edouard Duplan gifted Utrecht the lead in the opening 45 minutes after a howler from Ajax goalkeeper Kenneth Vermeer, and the French winger added a second after a quick counterattack in the second half.
The away side started the match the better side of the two and got a good chance to open the scoring early on. A deflected Edouard Duplan shot ended up in front of Alexander Gerndt, but the Swedish forward aimed just wide.
The reigning champions got their first chance of note around the half-hour mark when the referee awarded them a free kick in a dangerous position. Theo Janssen curled the set piece over the wall, yet his shot just missed the target by inches.
Utrecht then grabbed the lead in the 40th minute. Ajax goalkeeper Kenneth Vermeer dealt with a cross from the left poorly, and Duplan had no trouble pouncing on the rebound to make it 1-0 for the Domstedelingen.
Ajax could have levelled the scoring after the interval via substitute Nicolas Lodeiro, but the attacking midfielder headed wide from inside the area.
Rodney Sneijder then almost doubled Utrecht's lead against his parent club, but his powerful shot went over the crossbar.
The guests did make it two shortly after though following a superb counterattack. Gerndt set up Frank Demouge in the centre of the pitch, who found Duplan on the right. The winger controlled the ball and fired home from a narrow angle to put the match to bed.
Ajax have dropped to sixth in the table following their loss, with 34 points from 20 games. Their next match is the trip to NAC on February 11.
Utrecht are joint 14th after Sunday's win with 21 points from 20 matches. They host ADO Den Haag in their next game on February 12.
