Lazio 2-0 Atalanta: Hernanes and Klose see off 10-man visitors and move Reja's men four points clear in fourth spot
The key duo for the capital side did the damage and helped secure an important three points for the Biancocelesti in Rome over the visitors from Bergamo on Sunday
A first-half penalty from playmaker Hernanes and clincher from Miroslav Klose proved enough to solidify Lazio's position in the top four in Serie A, after seeing off Atalanta 2-0 at the Stadio Olimpico in the morning kick-off in Italy.
The Brazil international kept his nerve from the spot after Stefan Radu had been felled in the area, and the German striker added a second to send the capital club to within four points of leaders AC Milan and Juventus for the time being.
The hosts were humbled 4-0 by Siena last weekend, but bounced back in the Coppa Italia in midweek, eventually seeing off Hellas Verona 3-2 in an action-packed encounter.
Hernanes was the hero then, curling in the winning goal, and it was his cool head from 12 yards that gave his side an advantage 20 minutes in.
Radu drove into the area, and his run was culled by a challenge from Andrea Masiello. Hernanes then slotted home the penalty into the corner past the despairing dive of Andrea Consigli.
Klose had seen an effort saved prior to the opening goal going in, while in-form German Denis, joint top scorer in the division, was denied for the visitors courtesy of the reflexes of Federico Marchetti.
The home side, while the better team, lacked fluency for much of the contest, even when their task was made all the easier on 52 minutes, when Stefano Lucchini was dismissed.
The centre-back had been booked before the interval, and received his second yellow card for felling Tommaso Rocchi, although the Lazio forward seemed to more than make the most of the challenge.
Edy Reja's side attempted to press home their man advantage and secure the points, but struggled to break down the 10 men of Atalanta. Luciano Zauri went close with a stinging shot that just missed the target, while the industrious Klose forced Consigli into another save as he sought to close out the match.
But the former Bayern Munich striker would have to wait until the final minute to net his ninth league goal of the season, and rubber stamp the victory.
Klose collected the ball on the edge of the area, and feigned to play it out wide before dragging across his body and placing a shot carefully into the bottom corner, giving Consigli no chance.
Lazio move onto 33 points in the Serie A table, just four behind Milan, who compete in the city derby versus Inter on Sunday evening, while Juventus meet Cagliari in Turin.
