Bayern Munich began their Champions League Group A campaign on a high note as they earned a 2-0 victory over Villarreal at El Madrigal.

Toni Kroos opened the scoring after just seven minutes, and substitute Rafinha, who replaced the injured Daniel Van Buyten midway through the first half, put the game out of reach in the 76th minute.

After a somewhat shaky start, Franck Ribery broke into the left of the box and cut back to Kroos, who fired a clinical shot into the net from the centre of the box.

That seventh-minute opener served to settle the visitors' nerves, after they had initially struggled to control the dynamic frontpairing of Giuseppe Rossi and Nilmar.

In the 21st minute, the Italian had a good chance to equalise when he was played in on goal, but his finish was saved by Manuel Neuer.

Following Van Buyten's withdrawal, the visitors were vastly improved in defence, although their opportunities in the attacking area were limited. Kroos had a clear chance to make it 2-0 in the 69th minute, but, after lunging to connect with a low cross, he struck the post.

Nils Petersen, who came on for Mario Gomez at the break, also had a pair of chances, but fired straight into Diego Lopez's hands shortly after half-time, and later forced a brilliant save from the goalkeeper.

The Yellow Submarine remained in contention, but Rafinha netted the vital second goal with a powerful finish after an impressive solo run.

The game seemed to lose its competitive edge afterwards, and play slowed down, with both sides appearing content to settle for the result as it stood. The only noteworthy chance to come in the closing stages was a Rossi free kick, which sailed wide of the post.

The result sees Bayern move to the top of Group A following Napoli and Manchester City's draw. Villarreal, on the other hand, sit bottom.
