Zenit St Petersburg 3-1 Porto: Roman Shirokov double helps Russians beat 10-man visitors
The Russian side earned their first victory in this edition of the Champions League, while the Portuguese giants were worlds apart from their display a fortnight ago
By Luis Mira
The turning point was a first-half red card for Jorge Fucile, and the Russians dominated the second period, running out comfortable winners in the end.
Both sides entered the game pressing for an early goal, but it was Porto who managed to find it, through James Rodriguez. Hulk held the ball inside the box before moving past his defender and squaring the ball across the face of the goal for the Colombian to tap home at the far post.
But despite the goal, Porto suddenly became careless in possession and allowed Zenit to draw level on 19 minutes. Viktor Fayzulin delivered a great cross from the right, which Helton punched away right into into the path of Shirokov, who fired a low drive that deflected off Fucile into the net.
Porto coach Vitor Pereira’s plans then took a major setback as Kleber was taken off with an injury. With no striker on the bench, Silvestre Varela was brought out and deployed on the left wing, switching flanks with James Rodriguez as Hulk changed to a No. 9 role.
Things took another turn for the worse for the visitors just before the break, as Jorge Fucile left Porto with 10 men after seeing red for a second bookable offence. The Uruguayan left-back lost control of the ball and handled to prevent being dispossessed by a nearby Zenit attacker, leaving the referee no choice but to dismiss him.
The second half began with Vitor Pereira springing a tactical change. Fernando was put on the right side of the defence, while James Rodriguez was replaced by Souza, a defensive-minded midfielder.Zenit refused to let up and were close to the lead just four minutes into the second half. Aleksandr Kerzhakov got played through, but with only the keeper to beat, the striker's powerful effort hit the post.
In the 58th minute, Zenit's pressure reaped its reward as they took the lead for the first time in the game. Fayzulin whipped a free-kick into the area, where Shirokov calmly controlled the ball with a single touch before blasting home.
Porto were now completely drained of the confidence they had shown in the early stages of the match. Zenit, in contrast, refused to take their foot off the gas and strengthened their lead in the 72nd minute.
Kerzhakov moved past Nicolas Otamendi on the edge of the box before seeing his driven cross deflected to the far post. Danny popped up in the perfect position to tap home.
With APOEL playing against Shakhtar Donetsk later in the day, the victory sees Zenit move up to second in the table, while Porto are now third.
