A second-half equaliser by Jadson allowed Shakhtar Donetsk to secure a 1-1 draw as APOEL grabbed a surprising point in Ukraine in Champions League Group G.

The Brazilian struck just three minutes after Ivan Trickovski had given the Cypriots a 61st minute opener, and the visitors were able to hold on for an excellent result, moving to the top of their section in the process.

Shakhtar had suffered defeat in their opening group fixture, falling 2-0 in Porto, while APOEL had overcome the challenge of Zenit St Petersburg at home. As expected, the hosts dominated proceedings, with Willian and Jadson both going close as the away side lived a charmed life.

Chiotis was becoming accustomed to coming under regular bombardment, and his inspired block from Mkhitaryan before the interval ensured the score remained level.

In the second half, the flow of traffic continued towards the APOEL goal and Alex Teixeira somehow smashed the ball wide with the net at his mercy.

That miss proved pivotal. A searching pass from Constantinos Charalambidis found Trickovski in space and his finished stunned the Donbass Arena, flashing past Olexandr Rybka.

Shakhtar took just three minutes to deservedly draw level. Willian's delivery from wide eventually found its way to Jadson, who drilled the bouncing ball home.

From that point, it appeared that the Ukrainians would push on for victory, but Chiotis stayed strong and APOEL emerged from a formidable arena with a superb result.

They will be delighted to look down at the rest of the section from their position at the summit, while Shakhtar will rue their missed opportunities.
