Paris Saint-Germain 4-2 Athletic Bilbao: French collect required win but Antoine Kombouare's side still crash out of the Europa League

A late flurry saw the hosts score two goals in the final five minutes to earn the victory, but it was not enough to earn qualification into the knockout stages

A late own goal from Inigo Perez and a penalty from Guillaume Hoarau were enough to secure a 4-2 victory for Paris Saint-Germain against Athletic Bilbao in Group F action at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday evening, but their efforts were not enough to progress to the knockout stages of the Europa League.

To progress to the round of 32, PSG needed a positive result against the Spanish and for Salzburg to drop points against Slovan Bratislava. With Bilbao fielding a weakened team, the home side's goal seemed obtainable, but sloppy set-piece defending at the beginning of the match worsened their chances.

From a David Lopez corner in the third minute of play, an unmarked Jon Aurtenetxe rose to brilliantly head past Nicolas Douchez, who still managed to get a touch, but not enough to keep the ball out of his goal.

The home side recovered and it was due to further incompetent defending from set pieces that they equalised.  A Nene delivery was flicked on and found a completely free Javier Pastore who simply had to slide the ball past Raul Fernandez to level the match.

Antoine Kombouare's men controlled the flow of play after their goal with Pastore pulling strings in the midfield. They nearly earned an advantage in the scoreline when the masterful Argentine blew past two defenders and tested Raul with a hard strike.  The rebound found an unmarked Jean-Christophe Bahebeck, who missed an open net with an awful effort.

From a set piece, les Parisiens made their dominance count.  A swinging cross into the 18-yard box found Mathieu Bodmer, who was able to connect from the near post with a stunning header which found the top corner to put the home side ahead before half-time.

In the second half, PSG continued to control the flow of play, but through some individual brilliance, the away side managed to equalise.  Picking up the ball from around 35 yards, Lopez found space and unleashed a cracker of a strike which blew past Raul and once again levelled the scoreline.

Bahebeck continued what was an overall terrible display on the night when a defensive error isolated Iraola, whose effort scraped by the post.

Lopez's goal seemed to deflate PSG and a missed penalty from Nene added misery onto the hosts, with the wide player blasting his kick over the bar.

However, less than a minute after Nene's miss, PSG equalised.  Mevlut Erding found space on the right and crossed into the box, and a diving Perez connected with the ball but pushed it into his own net.

Minutes later, Nene made up for his penalty miss by going on a magical and lengthy run, beating several defenders in the process.  The run ended with another penalty being called against Athletic.  Hoarau made no mistake and beat Raul to earn the win.

A Salzburg victory, however, who came from two goals down to defeat Slovan Bratislava, spoiled the night as it eliminated the French side from competition.

With the win, PSG will be disappointed to be eliminated from Group F while Kombouare's position as coach will be further threatened.  The loss is of no consequence to Athletic as they still go through as leaders of the group.
