Goal.com rates the players on show as Herve Renard side win the 2012 Africa Cup on Nations in dramatic penalty shoot-out

By Martin Macdonald

Kennedy Mweene

7.0

A poor show of gamesmanship when he taunted Didier Drogba after his penalty miss in regular time slightly tarnishes a great performance. Controlled his area with authority, and although was eccentric when rushing out from his goal, saved Kolo Toure's penalty in the shoot-out.

Joseph Musonda
31
4
5.0

Unfortunately the 34-year-old had to be withdrawn through injury in the 10th minute after twisting his knee awkwardly on the edge of the Cote d'Ivoire box.

Hijani Himoonde
35
5
6.5

Communicated well with his defensive team-mate to deal with Drogba effectively. Put his body on the line and made a few excellent interceptions.

Davies Nkausu
31

6.0

Had a relatively comfortable match at right-back. Tiene did not offer much on the overlap up the left wing so he had one role which was to mark Kalou, which he did well. Looked more shaky after Gradel came on but for the most part, remained solid.

Stophira Sunzu

Man of the match performance. Did not allow himself to be bullied by the physical presence of Drogba and dominated him aerially. Continually cleared the ball from danger and blocked shots on the edge of the box. To top it all off, he scored the winning penalty in the shoot-out to seal the cup for his nation.

Isaac Chansa

5
6.5

Battled heroically in midfield and chased down Tiote and Zokora intensely. Attempted to create play whenever he could but was more employed in a defensive role as Cote d'Ivoire probed for a goal in the second half.

Rainford Kalaba
33

5.5

Set-piece deliveries were hot and cold, and on more than one occasion his free kicks were either over-hit or far too shallow. Did go on a couple of dangerous dribbles at the Cote d'Ivoire defence but his final ball could have been better.

Nathan Sinkala

6.0

Should have gave Zambia the lead in the first minute when he latched on to a loose ball on the edge of the box and attempted to blast a shot at goal but scuffed his effort. Made up for it with a few excellent crosses into the box that arguably should have been dispatched by his team-mates.

Chisamba Lungu
27

6.0

Attempted to create play from midfield whenever he could but could not get the ball down on the floor enough to spread play across the park. Still put in a workmanlike performance and summed up the determination of the Zambians.

Christopher Katongo

7.0

The Zambia captain encapsulated the 'never say die' attitude of his team. Was always in about the opposition defenders and putting them under pressure. Was very unlucky not to score when he neatly hit a shot on goal from close range that was touched on to the post by Barry.

Emmanuel Mayuka
40

6.5

Was a pest to the Cote d'Ivoire defenders and was dangerous when he came deeper to get the ball and turned to run at goal. Thought he had a golden chance to give Zambia the lead in the last minute of normal time only for a terrific challenge from Kolo Toure to take the ball off his foot.

Came on for Musonda in the 10th minute and slotted in well at left-back. However his temperament got the better of him and he earned a yellow card. This had his coach worried enough to take him off in the second half.

Felix Katongo
37

6.0

Showed some electric pace down the wings after his introduction and put some excellent crosses into the box.

Copa

6.5

Made a great save with his feet in the second half to deny Christoper Katongo at the near post to keep his side in the match. Was not a busy night for him overall.

Kolo Toure
50
16
7.0

Was arguably Côte d'Ivoire's best player in the final. Was completely dominant in the air and continually cleared balls out of the box. Highlight of his match was a brilliant last ditch challenge to take the ball off the foot of Mayuka when the Zambia man was through on goal near the end of the 90 minutes. Missed a penalty in the shoot-out, however.

Siaka Tiene
8
25
4.5

Barely got down the left wing and when he did his delivery into the box was not good enough as he continually hit the first defender. Did not fair much better when coming inside, and more than one Côte d'Ivoire attack was ruined by his poor passing.

Sol Bamba
10
18
6.0

Attempted to make a few runs into midfield from the centre of defence but lacked the quality to pick out passes when venturing forward. Defending was relatively solid throughout the match but he could have benefited from getting tighter to Christopher Katongo inside the box.

Didier Zokora
9
14
6.0

Done his job relatively well in the centre of midfield. Was neat in possession and put in a couple of well-timed tackles but did not offer anything whatsoever going forward, which was what Cote d'Ivoire needed.

Jean Jacques Gosso
5
15
6.0

Could have got forward more down the right to give some support on the wing for Côte d'Ivoire. Defending was decent when dealing with the ball on the floor. However, was regularly out-jumped at the back post by Katongo.

Cheikh Tiote
25
12
6.5

Was his usual combative self in the centre of the park. Broke up a number of attacks with well-timed tackles and regularly won the ball back. However, much like his centre midfield partner, could have offered more in the final third.

Yaya Touré
21
28
5.5

Was very unlucky not to score when his controlled shot from 12 yards out went a whisker by the left-hand post. However, was a largely disappointing performance. Attempted marauding runs forward that were easily stifled by Zambia. Passing was also poor and failed to effectively link up with Drogba.

Salomon Kalou
13
27
5.5

Was very quiet for the majority of his time on the park. Made a few decent darting runs in the penalty area but was not at the heart of any of Cote d'Ivoire's attacking play. Was substituted just after the hour mark for Max Gradel.

Gervinho
40
39
5.5

Looked dangerous when running with the ball at pace towards the Zambia defence but his final product was not there. Crosses into the box did not hit their mark, his final pass did not create a chance, and his shots on goal were weak and dealt with easily. Missed in the shoot-out, and that proved to be the deciding blow of the final.

Didier Drogba
Flop of the Match
62
90
5.0

Was having a fairly quiet match attempting to feed on scraps in the Zambia box. However, he should have won the final for his nation when he stepped up to take a penalty in the 70th minute only to blast the ball over the bar and let the Chipolopolo off the hook.

• Substitutions
Max-Alain Gradel
12
21
6.0

Looked bright after his introduction but passed up a great opportunity when he miskicked a shot inside the box with a whole goal to aim at.

Wilfried Bony
8
19
5.0

Chased the play down but could not get on the ball to affect the game.

Didier Ya Konan
10
20
5.5

Did not offer much after coming on. Frustrated his team-mates with a couple of very poor corner kicks as Côte d'Ivoire attempted to claim the win at the end of the 90 minutes.
