Davide Ballardini has been sacked by Lazio and will leave the club with immediate effect, according to both Dire news agency and Sky Sport Italia.

Ballardini was informed of the decision by sporting director Igli Tare on Tuesday afternoon under the orders of president Claudio Lotito.

The coach did not take the training session at Formello because of the decision. Protesting fans also stopped players from training altogether.

As things stand Ballardini is still at Formello, but he is no longer the coach.

Edy Reja, who replaces Ballardini, will arrive in Rome tonight to take on his new role. He is expected to take training on Wednesday morning.

An official announcement is expected later.

Meanwhile, three people have been taken to hospital following earlier clashes between fans and police outside the club's training ground.
