Last Year's Roma-Arsenal Referee Manuel Mejuto Gonzalez To Officiate Inter-Chelsea Champions League Showdown
The Spanish referee will take charge of the Euro showdown...
By Salvatore Landolina
The first leg of the round of 16 tie takes place at the San Siro on Wednesday and Gonzalez will be flanked by assistants Calvo Guadamuro and Yuste Jimenez, while the fourth official will be Fernandez Borbalan.
Gonzalez has a rich history in the Champions League against Italian teams, and he has been involved in some controversial clashes that have not gone Serie A's way.
He was the referee when Milan played Liverpool in the 2005 final, a game the Rossoneri lost. During that match he contentiously awarded a penalty to Steven Gerrard during a coming-together with Gennaro Gattuso.
He was also in charge when Roma clashed with Arsenal at this stage last year. The Giallorossi crashed out on penalties in the second leg in Rome, but the Romans were angry after the game as Gonzalez denied them a clear-looking penalty for Gael Clichy's foul on Marco Motta.
