AC Milan's Robinho thrilled with Santos' Copa Libertadores triumph

The 27-year-old, who was part of the team that lost to Boca Juniors in the 2003 final, declares himself a champion after watching the decider from his hotel

Robinho tasted considerable success during his two spells at Santos. He inspired the club to two Campeonato Brasileiro crowns during his first stint from 2002-05 and then helped them win the Campeonato Paulista and the Copa do Brasil in his second tour of duty in 2010.

But one title - an even greater one – that eluded Robinho during his time at the Vila Belmiro was the Copa Libertadores. In 2003, alongside the likes of current Chelsea defender Alex and Diego of Wolfsburg, the skilful forward helped Santos into the final, only to play in a 5-1 aggregate loss to Boca Juniors.

Last night, as his former side reappeared in the conclusion to South American club football's biggest fixture, Robinho was a mere spectator, transfixed to a television set in an Argentine hotel, where he is based with the Brazil squad preparing for the Copa America.

That nevertheless failed to prevent the elated 27-year-old feeling like a king when goals from Neymar and Danilo earned Santos a 2-1 win over Penarol and the Libertadores trophy.

“I'm also a champion, Robinho joked. “I want my [winner's] band, I will claim one from Neymar when he arrives [in Argentina]!”
