Antonio Cassano’s proposed move to Fiorentina appears to be in ruins after the Italian had a last-minute change of heart to remain a Sampdoria player.

Earlier today, Goal.com reported that the 27-year old had flown to Florence to complete a medical and eventually secure a loan switch until the end of the season.

The Viola were confident of completing a deal to ensure that Cassano could be involved in their squad to face Inter in the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia on Wednesday evening.

However, Goal.com Italy reports that the player has reneged on a move due to his affection for Sampdoria’s supporters and also his team-mates, and decided that he wanted to remain in Genoa.

Cassano has had a public fall-out with Sampdoria coach Luigi del Neri which has saw him frozen out of first-team action, but now the former Roma star is willing to stay and fight for his place at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.

It is thought that Fiorentina will still be looking to bring in a striker before the transfer window closes, with Barcelona loanee Keirrison, currently at Benfica, believed to be a secondary target.
