Manchester United will step up their pursuit of a new goalkeeper whether or not Edwin van der Sar decides to call time on his career at the end of the season, according to a report from The Manchester Evening News.

The 39-year-old Dutchman has previously stated that he will think very carefully about his future in the summer after a difficult season in which his wife suffered a brain haemorrhage at Christmas time.

The veteran usually renews his contract at Old Trafford in December but his wife's health scare disrupted that process this campaign.

Given that Van der Sar turns 40 next October, the decision is not one he will be rushing, and United apparently already have dossiers in place regarding potential successors.

Manuel Neuer (Schalke 04), Igor Akinfeev (CSKA Moscow), Rene Adler (Bayer Leverkusen) and Hugo Lloris (Lyon) have been linked with the Red Devils in the recent past.
