10 High Profile Strikers Who Could Be On The Move In This Transfer Window - Forlan, Klose And More
Goal.com sifts through the market for the forwards with the biggest reputations...
By Peter Staunton
Mounir El Hamdaoui - AjaxThe Morocco forward has reached the dying days of his brief sojourn after falling out with the new Ajax coach, Frank de Boer. El Hamdaoui was omitted from the Dutch side's Champions League line-up against Milan in December and phoned in sick the following day. He has recently returned to training but an exit looms large. The former Tottenham striker has been prolific in the Eredivisie with Ajax and AZ, and would provide goals for any prospective buyer. Weekend opponents Galatasaray are interested.
Djibril Cisse - PanathinaikosCisse cuts a powerful and effective figure on his best days and it is a surprise to see him in the relative football backwater that is the Greek Super League when he should be at the peak of his powers. The Frenchman is reportedly close to signing for Bordeaux in a €10 million deal and would be a fine addition to the deposed Ligue 1 champions.
Roque Santa Cruz - Manchester CityProof, as if it were needed, that a big money move to the most richly endowed team in the world is not always the best idea for a striker. Granted, the Paraguay frontman has suffered with injuries, but failing to make City's Premier League squad was a bitter blow. Both the player himself and his coach, Roberto Mancini, have said that he is likely to leave this winter but Santa Cruz wants only a permanent move. Lazio and Blackburn Rovers are interested in doing business.
Amauri - JuventusAmauri's stock has undoubtedly fallen and the Old Lady would happily cut him loose over the winter transfer window. That is if another team could be persuaded to take a punt on him. The goals have dried up for the Brazil-born Italy international but a fresh start could be all he needs to get back among the elite. So far, Liverpool, Fiorentina and, fancifully, Real Madrid have been linked with a move for the former Palermo goal-getter.
Robbie Keane - Tottenham HotspurIreland's record goalscorer has endured a torrid time at Tottenham Hotspur since returning from Liverpool in January 2009 and looks to be set for his third successive winter move. However, Keane's reputation has taken a battering at Spurs this season and he embarrassingly even failed to make a bench onto which Harry Redknapp had placed two goalkeepers. Nonetheless, the former Inter player remains a striker of fine pedigree and with a run of games could prove to be a catalyst to a team's spring campaign. West Ham and Birmingham have staked a claim.
Vagner Love - CSKA MoscowThe 26-year-old is 'desperate' to return to Flamengo and feature alongside Ronaldinho at club level but would certainly cut a fearsome prospect at any club across the Old Continent. Seemingly steadfast in his desire to leave CSKA since arriving there in 2004, Love remains under contract with the Army Men. The club would be eager to cash in on their star turn to the tune of $30m which is a sum outside the capabilities of Flamengo. A European club may yet attempt to turn his head.
David Trezeguet - HerculesThe Spanish side's financial turmoil has been well documented and the staff of Hercules have been without their wages since November. It has been enough for one recent signing, Royston Drenthe, to strike but the minnows would be receptive to bids for Trezeguet in order to reduce their salary commitments. The 33-year-old would prefer to stay at Hercules but may not have too much of a say in the matter. A return to Italy, with Lazio, Inter or Fiorentina, could materialise.
Miroslav Klose - Bayern MunichLike Keane, Klose's reputation has been built more on his international contributions than his interventions at club level. There can be no denying his striking capabilities though, even if he is drastically out of favour at Bayern Munich. The 32-year-old has revealed that he would be open to a move abroad. Lazio were thought to be keen and a shock move to striker-lite Real Madrid would be intriguing.
Emmanuel Adebayor - Manchester CityIn the same boat as his club-mate Santa Cruz. With Carlos Tevez seemingly set to stay at Eastlands until summer, Adebayor is a long way from being Mancini's first choice striker in a formation that utilises only one out-and-out front-man. Combine Tevez's elongated stay at City with the presence of Mario Balotelli and Edin Dzeko and it is apparent that the Togo striker is set to be frozen out. An alleged target of Real Madrid in a loan deal.
Diego Forlan - Atletico MadridThe World Cup's Golden Ball winner has not been his effervescent self at Atletico this season and has not been speaking about his club in glowing terms during this transfer window. The Uruguayan forward has had issues with form and injuries during this campaign and seems a player in need of a restart. Juventus have reportedly been in contact and the 31-year-old would be available for around €10m.
