Real Madrid sporting director Jorge Valdano is the latest to leap to the defence of Cristiano Ronaldo, following his sending off.

Speaking to Marca, Valdano said, "A referee must be aware of not spoiling the spectacle."

"Cristiano always wants to play. When they tackle him from behind, he tries to break free, unlike others who dive to claim a foul.

"Rather than Ronaldo adapting to La Liga, referees should adapt to his style."

Los Merengues will be without Cristiano Ronaldo for their trip to Deportivo on the weekend.
