Real Madrid returned to training today after being granted a day of rest on Monday following their victory against Malaga on Sunday. The Liga match had come straight off the back of the friendly they played in Albania in midweek.

In coach Manuel Pellegrini's customary chat to begin training, only Pepe was absent due to his season-ending knee injury. After the chat, Rafael Van der Vaart, Fernando Gago, Gonzalo Higuain, Ezequiel Garay and Lassana Diarra all retired to the indoor training facility to do recovery work for their respective injuries. Mahamadou Diarra did not train, having picked up an injury during the Africa Cup of Nations which will keep him out for two weeks.

Because of the large number of players out, Pellegrini called up youth team right-back Javi Velayos to complete his squad. Madrid travel to Galicia to take on Deportivo La Coruna in this weekend's Liga fixture.
