Madrid Press Show Lionel Messi Pushing Off Defender Similar To Cristiano Ronaldo's Red Card
The Argentine committed a foul very similar to CR9 without seeing so much as a whistle blown against him, and Los Blancos are ready to use the video evidence in their appeal...
By Cyrus C. Malek
The event in question is a clip taken from Barcelona's 4-0 win against Sevilla two weeks ago in La Liga when Valiente attempted to hold up Barca star Messi by grabbing the Argentine by the waist, shirt, and arm in a manner similar to Mtliga's pull-back of Cristiano Ronaldo. Instead of going down and simulating the foul, Messi attempts to free himself from the taller defender's grasp by pushing him off with his right arm, his elbow lashing backward at Valiente's chest and face, although not making contact with the latter. The action came in a number of motions, intended to deter the Sevilla defender in a manner eerily similar to the play in question on Sunday at the Bernabeu.
In Messi's case, no foul was called for the Argentine's wild flailing and Valiente was booked for his infraction, whilst in Sunday's match Ronaldo was sent off for his actions against the defender. The only differences between the videos which provide a surprisingly accurate comparison, appears to be the fact that Ronaldo has longer arms than Messi and thus made contact with his defender's face.
It is reported that the video will be used by Los Blancos as evidence in an appeal to the Liga's Competition Committee to exonerate the Madrid star from having to serve out a suspension for his sending off, thus making him available in their weekend fixture at Deportivo La Coruna.
