Almeria 3-1 Sporting Gijon

The match started in the worst possible fashion for the home side, with Chico receiving a straight red card for deliberate handball inside the area, after only twelve minutes of play.

Diego Castro slotted home the spot kick, and it looked like an uphill task for Juan Manuel Lillo’s side.

However, the ten men bounced back instantly and found an equaliser through Albert Crusat, who struck home from twelve yards after he had been played through by Hernan Bernardello.

And the turnaround was complete on three minutes before the break. Domingo Cisma swung in a free kick from all of forty yards, and it evaded everyone to nestle in the corner of the net for a bizarre goal.

Guilherme made sure of the win with ten minutes remaining, and the result gives Almeria breathing space from the relegation positions at the foot of the table.

Athletic Bilbao 3-2 Xerez

Athletic Bilbao came from 2-1 at half-time to deal Xerez a crushing blow by winning 3-2 at San Mames.

In an exciting match, the Basque side opened the scoring after just two minutes thanks to their prodigious teenager, Iker Muniain, who nodded home a Toquero cross from close range.

However, Xerez notched only their second win of the season last week, and they turned this match around thanks to goals from Vicente Moreno and Mario Bermejo, to head into the interval with a shock lead.

But the bottom’s side brittle defence could not hold out for all three points, and a wonderful looping header from striker Fernando Llorente on 64 minutes gave Bilbao a deserved equaliser.

And to the dismay of hapless Xerez, Llorente was not done yet. The classy frontman slotted home what proved to be the winner from close range with just four minutes remaining,  and the points stayed in Bilbao.

Malaga 0-0 Deportivo la Coruna

There was nothing to choose between the sides in Andalusia as Deportivo put up a strong defensive display to leave with a point.

Juan Ramon Lopez Muniz's side, coming from a fantastic 2-0 win versus Atletico Madrid last weekend, had the better of the play and looked to be in with a chance of victory when Pablo Alvarez was dismissed for Deportivo before half-time.

Despite the man advantage Malaga never looked like having the ambition to go for all three points, and in the end were happy to settle for a share of the spoils that edged them clear of the relegation zone.
Mallorca 1-0 Villarreal

Mallorca’s sensational home record continued this afternoon after a late goal from Nunes consigned Juan Carlos Garrido to defeat in his first match in charge of Villarreal.

In a tight contest with little in the way of clear cut opportunities, the goal came from the most unlikely of sources. Full-back Nunes found space in the area to nod the ball past Diego Lopez with just nine minutes remaining.

The result represents an astonishing tenth successive league win at home for the Islanders, while Villarreal, on the other hand, must continue to rebuild following the departure of coach Ernesto Valverde last weekend.

Osasuna 1-0 Tenerife

Tenerife's dreadful run away from home in the Primera Division continued as Osasuna did enough to win a tight and edgy affair by a solitary goal.

Osasuna secured the points three minutes into the second half thanks to striker Carlos Aranda, who pounced on a through pass from Javier Camunas to slot the ball into the net.

The Pamplona side did not have things all their own way however, and Tenerife had chances through Nino and Alejandro Alfaro, but in the end los Rojillos held on for the points to secure their third consecutive league victory.
