Athletic Bilbao striker Fernando Llorente was delighted that his side had managed to ‘win ugly’ and secure all three points this afternoon against a stubborn Xerez side at San Mames.

Iker Muniain opened the scoring for the Basque side in the opening minutes, but La Liga’s bottom club immediately hit back thanks to goals from Vicente Moreno and Mario Bermejo.

However, Bilbao were not to be denied, and a second half double from Fernando Llorente turned the match around and gave the hosts all three points.

Hero Llorente said after the match, “We have to very very happy with what we have achieved today. The game was very ugly and it became very difficult, but these are three important points.

“We are a team that always believes that we can come back, and sometimes we achieve it.”

In addition, the Spanish international striker added that he was pleased with his own personal contribution towards the win, with his seventh and eighth league goals of the campaign.

He concluded, “I was very happy with my header, and it is good that there is competition to finish as top scorer.”
