Player Ratings: Villarreal 2-1 Athletic Bilbao
El Submarino Amarillo edged to victory against the Basques at El Madrigal, and Goal.com took a closer look at the players on show...
VILLARREAL
Diego Lopez: 8 - He had no chance with the goal but made a vital penalty save in the dying minutes to ensure that his side picked up all three points.
Javi Venta: 6.5 - Supported his team on the overlap well but almost undid his good work when he conceded a penalty for a clear foul on Muniain.
Gonzalo: 6 - Couldn't deal with Llorente either in the air or on the floor, and nearly put the ball in his own net on the hour mark.
Godin: 5 - More able to cope with Llorente than his defensive partner, but was sent off for a ridiculous kick on Javi Martinez as they both lay on the ground.
Capdevila: 8 - Took the goal very well with his weaker right foot. Always a threat going forwards and defensively sound - a fine performance.
Senna: 6.5 - He had to put pressure on Gabilondo when he equalised instead of ducking out of the way of his shot, but otherwise solid in the midfield.
Matilla: 7.5 - Called up from the Villarreal B side and did well for the first team. Quietly efficient on the ball and provided defensive cover.
Cani: 7 - Good performance as he moved the ball onto the flanks from the middle of the pitch, and played in a superb ball for Nilmar to set up the second goal.
Pires: 6.5 - The veteran got himself into some excellent positions but either there was a lack of options in attack or he chose the wrong one.
Fuster: 8 - Played a neat one-two with Capdevila to set up the goal, and played numerous other incisive passes that split open the Athletic defence.
Nilmar: 7.5 - Took his goal very calmly and always looked sharp up front, but had chances to put the game beyond doubt.
Substitutes:
Ibagaza: 7 - Clearly influenced the game when he came on, showing great vision and setting up several chances for his side.
Musacchio: 6 - The youngster did nothing wrong during his time on the field.
Marcos Ruben: N/A - Only had a few minutes on the pitch.
ATHLETIC BILBAO
Iraizoz: 7 - Had to make several good saves to keep his side in the game, but could do little to prevent either goal.
Iraola: 5.5 - Missed the crucial penalty to level the game in the dying stages, and the frustrations of his team-mates were evident in the following minutes.
San Jose: 7.5 - He was very solid at the back and made a number of important tackles, although he was occasionally caught out by the quality of the through ball.
Amorebieta: 6.5 - Wasn't tight enough on Nilmar for the second goal, and the Brazilian was frequently able to find space on the pitch where Amorebieta should have been marking him.
Xabi Castillo: 5.5 - Unable to prevent the threat of Pires and Javi Venta on the right hand side, as Villarreal used the right flank to launch a large number of attacks.
Gurpegui: 6.5 - He was out of position on the right hand side, allowing Capdevila to have more of a say in the Athletic half, but he battled valiantly until his substitution.
Orbaiz: 4 - Suspect defensively as he conceded a number of free kicks and failed to close down his opponents, while his set pieces were poor. Sent off in injury time for a needless foul.
Javi Martinez: 5.5 - During the first half he was excellent as he supported the strikers, but he faded from the game in the second period until his dismissal in the 91st minute.
Gabilondo: 7 - His equaliser will certainly be a contender for goal of the month, taking advantage of the space afforded to him and fired a shot into the top corner, but he was otherwise fairly anonymous.
De Marcos: 6 - He wasn't picking up as many of Llorente's knockdowns as he would have wished and was largely ineffective.
Llorente: 7 - He had the run of Gonzalo as he beat him time after time on the byline, and won most of the countless long balls that came his way. Should have put Athletic in front in the first half but stabbed the ball wide from three yards.
Substitutes:
Susaeta: 5.5 - Brought on to provide more natural width on the right hand side but he didn't pick up the rhythm of the game and was fairly quiet.
Muniain: 7 - As usual, he was a bright spark on the pitch for Athletic and thought he had rescued a point when he brought a foul from Javi Venta in the penalty area.
Toquero: N/A - He had barely entered the fray before his team imploded and any chance of saving the game was lost.
Diego Lopez: 8 - He had no chance with the goal but made a vital penalty save in the dying minutes to ensure that his side picked up all three points.
