Sevilla Coach Manolo Jimenez Frustrated With Media Criticism
The tactician reckons his side deserve more credit...
By Paul Macdonald
Getafe defeated the Rojiblancos 1-0 in Madrid in the second leg of the tie, but Jimenez’s men crept through 2-1 on aggregate to seal a mouth-watering clash with Atletico Madrid.
However, sections on the Spanish media have questioned the recent poor performances Sevilla produced on route to the final, something that disappoints the coach.
Speaking at a press conference yesterday, he said of the media, “It hurts me that they [the media] don’t rate the work the team has done in the Copa del Rey in knocking out Barcelona, Deportivo and Getafe. We’ve eliminated great teams and I don’t think it is fair to say that Sevilla did not deserve to win the ties against Barcelona and Getafe.
“It’s true that in Getafe we had a poor game, and in terms of play we need to improve, but it’s also true that at the Riazor [where Sevilla beat Deportivo 3-0] we produced a brilliant game, and also in Barcelona.”
In addition, Jimenez commented the difficulty of reaching a cup final, and pointed to the club’s history as a case in point.
He added, “In 104 years of history, we have been in seven finals, and right now it may seem easy, but it is not.
“We have got there by our own merit, not by the luck of the draw.”
