Almeria Defender Chico: Containing Xavi Is The Key To Stopping Barcelona
Defender says his side must stop Xavi this weekend…
By Rupert Fryer
Almeria defender Chico has insisted that his side must contain Xavi if they wish to contain Barcelona this weekend.
The Andalusians host the Blaugrana on Saturday and Chico took the time to reminisce about the man marking job he attempted on Xavi when the two sides met earlier this season at Camp Nou, insisting some Catalonians may have gotten the wrong impression of him.
“I usually prefer to play the ball,” he told Barca TV. “That was the story of just one game. Everybody knows I like to be in contact with the ball, bring it out of defence and enjoy the game.”
Chico’s side went down 1-0 that night and the former Barca B man went on to reveal he felt controlling Xavi would be the key to his side avoiding defeat this weekend.
“We all know how good Barca are at holding onto possession and that the game works through Xavi. If we could control him, then the others around him would be affected and they’d struggle to hold onto the ball.”
