Real Madrid Star Guti Confident of Champions League Progression Against Lyon
The experienced midfielder knows how important the upcoming clash against OL is in Los Merengues' season...
By Paul Macdonald
Real Madrid playmaker Guti has insisted that failure to get past Lyon in the Champions League in midweek would represent a massive failure for the club.
Los Blancos have exited the tournament at the last 16 stage for the last five consecutive seasons, and the French side travel to the Santiago Bernabeu with a 1-0 advantage from the first leg.
The 33-year old, who was involved in Saturday evening's incredible comeback versus Sevilla where the capital club came from two goals down to win 3-2 in the dying moments of the match, insists that the players are ready for the clash.
He said, “We are confident and we want to play a good match. With the signings we have made this year and knowing that the final is being played at the [Santiago] Bernabeu, we have to give 100% to win the game.
“It would be a failure not to make it through the tie against a side like Lyon, who are good but not among the biggest sides in Europe.”
Guti predicted that coach Manuel Pellegrini will set up an offensive side for the match, and given the absence of Xabi Alonso, hopes to start in midfield.
He added, “I want to play from the beginning, especially for games as important as this. Nobody wants to lose.”
