In a press conference today, Barcelona right-back Dani Alves has declared: "I do not consider Real Madrid to be leaders" in La Liga because "the return fixture [at the Santiago Bernabeu] has not yet been played".

In comments reported by Marca, Alves declared that Barcelona were still tops in La Liga, despite the official table now giving Madrid a slight edge. "Without a doubt Barcelona are favourites. If they [Madrid] want to be champions, they need to prove it," said Alves, who dismissed Los Blancos' celebrations at the Santiago Bernabeu after the Sevilla match as if a title had been won as "normal".

Alves also added that this season seems worse than last season because of the advantage they held over their rivals in the table. "We are slaves to last season and now opponents come to us to defend. We never lose our essence. Teams come here with care, but we are looking for the best ways to beat them."

Alves did, however, recognise that Barca's level of play was perhaps not as polished as last season and confessed that the Blaugrana players were conscious of the dip. "We have to recover our form as we are entering a difficult time in the season. We know what we are capable of doing.

"It is more mental than physical. It is difficult to create chances when they are withdrawing in defence. When we play better, we have fun and we have to have that mental strength because it is only in that way that we will do well in the end."
