Churchill Brothers went down to UAE’s Al Wahda with a 5-2 scoreline on Saturday evening in the crucial Asian Champions League play-off and thus, saw their dreams of making it into the prestigious club competition wither away.

Coach Carlos Pareira believes that the scoreline was a little harsh given that his side started the better of the two and had better opening exchanges.

Speaking to Goal.com, Carlos Pareira said, “We started the match (well) in my opinion. Some (young) players were too much afraid to play and were nervous. But after fifteen minutes, we started playing head-to-head against a very strong and experienced team.

“We scored and had a chance to score one more. But the problem of two injured players made our team in big problem.”

The Goan side were forced to substitute the in-form Reisangmi Vashum and Felix Chimaokwu and the Brazilian said that it played a crucial role in his side’s eventual defeat.

“The equaliser in the last minutes of the first half and the two changes in my opinion changed all my plans for the second half,” said Pareira.

Experience was lacking in this Churchill Brothers side and their coach is quick to point towards it and also highlighted a couple of positives from the game.

“Our team needed more experience to play this tournament. For some time, we had control over the game but we faced a team better than us.

“But our players, like I said before, played on the same level and this gives me hope when we are back to play in the Indian National League and the AFC with more chances to have a good performance.”

Pareira also mentioned that the display by his side gave him a fair idea as to where Indian clubs stand on the continental stage.

“I hope the players learn how the AFC Champions League, an important and difficult competition, is. It was a very good experience for me and gives me exactly how the standard (of football) in India and in UAE is. We need to improve in many things if we want good performance in this tournament,” said the former coach of East Bengal.
