Philippines Football Federation to focus on the youth development
The Azkals are trying to strengthen their squad in the future by investing in young footballers rather than turning to foreign-born Filipinos
By Eric Noveanto
Half-Filipino players such as Ray Jonsson, Dennis Cagara, Jerry Lucena, Paul Mulders and Stephan Schrock have all been called up by the Azkals in recent times as the national team searches for talent to take it to the next level.
However, the Kasibulan program is targeting kids aged six to 12 who are considered to have the potential to be next Emelio Caligdong and Ian Araneta, the current national team members.
PFF will run this agenda partnering with the Asian Football Development Project (AFDP) of Jordanian Prince Ali bin Al Hussein and the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp.
According to Al Hussein, the founder and chairman of AFDP, he will make the Kasibulan 2012 as a pilot project for the organisation to provide effective assistance to all Asian national and regional football associations and affiliates.
“The Philippines is very promising and I appreciate the view of the PFF president about grassroots development,” Prince Ali told The Philippines Star.
He added: “You’ve gone a long way, as seen by the emergence of the Azkals and I believe you should start the creation of a new generation of Azkals.”
The PFF president Mariano Araneta stated his ultimate goal was to develop youth players and qualify for the 2019 Fifa Under-17 World Cup.
Meanwhile, the CEO of Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp Cristino Naguiat Jr revealed his excitement on his way to help this program.
“It (Kasibulan) will help train Filipino football players starting from the grassroots level with an end goal of achieving excellence and strengthening their competitive skills," said Cristino.
Kasibulan was relaunched in Calamba during the Calamba Football Festival and this program targets about 200 festivals all over the country for the year, with 500 to 1000 participants in each staging.
