Saudi Arabian giants Al Ittihad have reportedly failed in a move to hire former Germany international Lothar Matthaus as their new coach.

Reports from the Middle East over the weekend revealed the Tigers of Jeddah had been negotiating with Matthaus, who is currently out of a job having ended his coaching spell with Bulgaria last year.

Goal.com understands the negotiations between Al Ittihad and Matthaus have stalled although the Saudi club hasn't confirmed the situation.

Eight-time Saudi champions Al Ittihad sacked former Slovenia boss Matjaz Kek from the post last week after only a month in the role.

Al Ittihad, who are two-time Asian champions, are preparing for their 2012 AFC Champions League campaign which begins in March, after a dismal league term where they sit sixth.

The Tigers of Jeddah are also understood to have chased former Marseille and PSV Eindhoven boss Eric Gerets, who coached Al Hilal during the 2009-10 season, as well as ex-Egypt manager Hassan Shehata.

Matthaus, who retired as a player in 2000, has had previous coaching spells at Bulgaria, Maccabi Netanya, Red Bull Salzburg, Paranaense, Hungary, Partizan Belgrade and Rapid Vienna.
