Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes has received some disappointing news from the treatment table in the aftermath of his side's 2-0 DFB Pokal quarter-final win over Stuttgart on Wednesday evening as midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has picked up an ankle injury in the game.

Schweinsteiger, who only recently returned from a shoulder injury, featured from the start at the Mercedes Benz Arena, but picked up a knock early on and was replaced in the 17th minute.

The Germany international underwent further examination on Thursday morning to clarify the extent of the injury, and a scan has revealed ankle ligament damage, specifically a torn anterior exterior ligament in the right ankle.

The injured joint was immediately put in plaster, and Schweinsteiger will wear the cast for a week, before being fitted with a special protective shoe.

"We’ll issue an estimate of when Bastian should be able to train and play again at a later date," commented club doctor Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt on the club's official website.
