Sporting Lisbon's sacking of Domingos Paciencia motivated by Porto talks
The Lisbon-based club have allegedly decided to part company with the ex-Braga coach after learning that he had set his heart on a potential switch to Porto
By Luis Mira
The Estadio de Alvalade outfit gave Domingos his marching orders on Monday despite president Godinho Lopes stressing at the weekend that the former Braga man's job was not under threat.
"We are aware that Domingos had contact with Porto officials in the last few weeks and that a potential appointment at the club always interested him," a Sporting source told Lusa.
"He was no longer focussed on Sporting's interests. After we learned about these contacts with Porto, it caused a huge discomfort and a poor atmosphere at the club."
It is believed that Domingos, who played at Porto for 17 years and coached the club's B squad in 2004-05, was the Portuguese champions' priority to replace Andre Villas-Boas when he left for Chelsea.
However, Porto had to settle for Vitor Pereira as Domingos had already agreed to join Sporting.
With Porto exiting the Champions League in the group stage and trailing Benfica by five points in the Portuguese Liga, Pereira has been under fire, and it is understood that the club will appoint a new coach at the end of the season.
Domingos and Sporting have reportedly not yet reached an agreement regarding the termination of the contract and, in light of this news, the Lisbon-based club are considering not offering the 43-year-old any sort of compensation.
