Former Nigeria midfielder Mutiu Adepoju praises Stephen Keshi for developing home-grown team
The ex-international says that the national trainer’s ground-breaking decision will be appreciated in the near future
By Emeka Nwani
Mutiu Adepoju, the general manager of Shooting Stars Sports Club, has praised the efforts of the Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi in putting together a home-grown national team.
Adepoju maintained that Keshi needs to be encouraged because what he has done will finally stabilise the Super Eagles.
Keshi has been experimenting with players from the Nigerian Premier league since taking over the mantle after Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations under former coach Samson Siasia.
"I played with Keshi in the Super Eagles and I know that whatever he sets his mind to do, he does it well. So that is why I want to say he has started well by assembling these players from the domestic league in the country,” Adepoju told Goal.com.
"Nigerians will get to appreciate the full impact of what he is doing in no distant time. Our League players have long been neglected and this move will greatly motivate them to know that they don't have to travel to obscure leagues in the world to get noticed."
"Another key fact is that Keshi would not need to invite so many Europe-based players any time the Super Eagles have a game. My only prayer is that the football authorities will do everything possible to sustain what they have started so that there will be matches at all times," Adepoju said.
