Orlando Pirates' latest acquisition Luis Boa Morte: Don't underestimate the PSL
The newest addition to the Buccaneers has revealed that his believes the South African top flight can rival and top many European leagues
Boa Morte joins 'Ezimnyama Ngenkani' on a free transfer after leaving Greek club Larissa in December and he is convinced he has made the right decision.
The ex-Arsenal, Southampton, Fulham and West Ham United midfielder says the PSL is of a better standard in comparison to the Greek Super League and other Leagues in Europe.
"People underestimate the PSL, because it is in Africa hence they don't know much about it or make enquiries about it. The thing is because the PSL is in Africa people think the pitches are not good or the League has no quality players so I think people should make enquiries or even come over to have a look and maybe they would have a different opinion," he said at a press conference.
"When I left England I went to Greece and for sure Greece doesn't have a better League than South Africa. I believe there are many Leagues in Europe that are not better than the PSL," Boa Morte contended.
On the other hand, Pirates boss and PSL chairman Irvin Khoza says he hopes the arrival of Boa Morte would attract even bigger names to the League.
"I hope this may be a trend in terms of slowly moving at a level where all the other players who are significantly popular in the world will see South Africa as a destination of choice and that will ensure our League become even stronger. It is good to see players of the standard of Luis Boa Morte coming to South Africa."We want to make the PSL the League of choice," Khoza said.
The 'Iron Duke' adds that he is not overly concerned that the League is attracting only players in the twilight of their careers, such as Boa Morte who is 34.
"The MLS [of the US] started this way, by signing the likes of Pele and these days a lot of the big names are interested in playing there so this is a start for us," Khoza concluded.
