Penarol coach Diego Aguirre proud of players despite Santos defeat
The Manya legend was delighted at the effort Penarol showed throughout the Copa Libertadores, and put a brave face on falling at the final hurdle against Santos
By Daniel Edwards
Goals from Neymar and Danilo proved vital in the Pacaembu as the home team took a commanding second half lead, and while Penarol pulled one back through a Durval own goal, it was not enough to force extra time in a hard-fought second leg.
Aguirre, however, declared himself proud at Penarol's cup run, and thanked his charges for a wonderful campaign in 2011.
"I feel so proud of them, for all the joys they have given me. Although we could not win, and that was obviously our goal, today when I saw Penarol in the last game of the Copa I felt so happy and proud," 'La Fiera' told FoxSports on Thursday morning, after declining to give an interview in the immediate aftermath of the match.
"It was a tremendously difficult Copa, that began with 38 teams. One by one the giants and favourites fell and Penarol, with their weapons, with the total commitment of every player, reached this incredible final, against a tough rival and a great of Brazil and America which is Santos. We were to lose, and we are devastated by that."
The defeat means that Penarol continue their search for a sixth Copa Libertadores triumph, after last lifting the trophy in 1987.
