Penarol president Raul Damiani has admitted that star forward Alejandro Martinuccio is on the verge of sealing a move to Europe, with Sicilian side Catania the most likely destination for the Argentine.

He was first linked with a Brazilian switch, but maintained throughout that Europe was his preferred destination. Damiani has now confirmed that such a move is soon to become a reality.

"Martinuccio's destiny is soon to be in Europe. Catania. That is the way for him," the chief told Radio 1010 on Friday morning.

In doing so, Damiani ruled out the prospect of a move to Brazil, and also praised his striker for refusing to comment on any transfers until the conclusion of the Libertadores.

"This speaks very well of him," he stated.

The former Nueva Chicago star is one of several players who could join an exodus out of Montevideo for the coming season. Veteran Dario Rodriguez and Antonio 'Tony' Pacheco are close to cutting their ties with the club, while midfielder Jonathan Urretaviscaya has already left for Portugal as a loan deal with Benfica expired.

The 23-year-old raised his profile immensely in 2011 with outstanding performances in the Copa Libertadores, scoring two goals as he helped the Manya reach the final for the first time since 1987. Penarol eventually fell short over two legs against Santos, but their number 10 has been recognised as a real talent in South American football.
