Mexican outfit Club America were dealt with a deafening blow when news broke out on Monday that their striker Salvador Cabanas was shot in the head. The Paraguayan international's situation is serious, but the forward has vowed to his wife that he will survive the attack.

"He was conscious when we entered the hospital. He was talking to me to know where I was. He knew what day was his birthday," Maria Alonso Mena, wife of Salvador Cabanas, told Radio Nanduti.

"He was always very positive and said, 'I will get through this'. He was conscious until he got anaesthesia and continually told me to inform his parents and to ask them to visit him.

"I want to ask the public to pray for him, because his situation is very serious," she concluded.
